Modding Character Colors Tutorial & A Few of My Guns

Post by OG Juice Box on Mon Mar 19, 2012 3:44 pm

Hey whats up just joined this site after finding it randomly in google and noticed there wasn't much in the way of tutorials or anything. Figured I would share a little of my knowledge, so here is a quick tutorial on how to Mod your Borderlands character colors. Also I will throw in a few of my favorite modded guns.

The Tutorial:

Step 1: You will need a method of transferring your game save onto your computer. The method I use is USB drive and a program called USB Xtaf Xplorer(I play on xbox). I haven't yet read the rules on the site and do now want to give anybody bad links, so if you want the program I suggest google. If you need help using this program or another method youtube has tons of helpful video's for that.

Step 2: You will need a hexadecimal editing program or a "Hex Editor." Again the program i have is called HxD, again I will not be posting a link so I suggest google.

Step 3: Now we start... Open your hex editor and load up your save into the program. It should look similar to this:

Different programs may have different layouts but the key thing is a Byte is every 2 digits, for example here is a line of 16 hex bytes:

27 90 C2 97 23 EF 25 6D 00 91 77 24 CB C5 D6 30

and here is the same line 2 more times with a different byte group size:

2790 C297 23EF 256D 0091 7724 CBC5 D630

2790C297 23EF256D 00917724 CBC5D630

So if i were to say byte 12 it would be these 2 numbers:

27 90 C2 97 23 EF 25 6D 00 91 77 24 CB C5 D6 30
2790 C297 23EF 256D 0091 7724 CBC5 D630
2790C297 23EF256D 00917724 CBC5D630

If i were to say byte 3 it would be these 2 numbers:

27 90 C2 97 23 EF 25 6D 00 91 77 24 CB C5 D6 30
2790 C297 23EF 256D 0091 7724 CBC5 D630
2790C297 23EF256D 00917724 CBC5D630

That info isn't required to know for this tutorial but its just a helpful bit of information.

Step 4: Now in the program search for your characters name. this name can be changed in game so it differs for each game save. Say you started with a siren her name would be lilith but if you changed it at any of the new you stations it will be what you changed it to. I am using a hunter for this tutorial and did not change his name so will be searching for Mordecai. If you downloaded HxD then the search option will be called find and can be found in the search drop box in the program:

If your characters name is the same as the starting name make sure you find the name that is by itself. Some class mods and other such items will have the starting characters names in them as well. one way to check is to look for the FF's in the picture bellow indicated by red arrows pointing at them.

The numbers highlighted in yellow may be different for you as these are the colors of your character, they are the same as they would be in game 111111 is a HTML color for dark grey. Now to find the color you want to make your character in game consult an HTML color chart like this one:
(Keep in mind this chart is nowhere near complete you can find much larger charts out there I just found this on on google images)

Simply use the numbers from the chart to change the numbers of your current colors say I wanted to make my characters clothes completely blue I would change them to 0000FF (If you play on PS3 or Xbox) like this:

Once you have changed your colors click File > Save, then open your save file up in a Rehash/Resigner Program and Rehash/Resign it, the program I use for this is called CONcept. Then simply transfer your save back to your xbox/ps3 load it up and you will now have new colors to represent. Other players online will also see your new colors you can check them out in split screen play as well. Just a word of warning tho they may not turn out as amazing as you hoped as the game has shadowing effects so they may appear pale and dull instead of bright and colorful. Brick I know of for sure and the soldier and siren seem to wear most colors brightly tho. The hunter on the other hand typically turns into pale dark colors... Anyways hope this helps you guys out and now for my few Weapons.
